Just in time for The Oscars I have made my list of the year’s top films after catching up as much as I can.  In no particular order here they are.

Super 8

This is some of the most fun I have had all year at the theater. The nostalgia runs thick, but it is handled with respect and strong emotion.  Some of the smallest moments were the most revelatory.

Tree of Life

Not a perfect film but one of most audacious in scope in perhaps the last decade.  It is a monumental outing and still comes back to resonate with me as I have been digesting it throughout the year.

Hugo

Another dose of nostalgia related to film itself. Not only does Scorsese revive film’s beginnings but also shows what the 3rd dimension should be used for.  The film even explores deeper ideas of purpose and creativity.

The Artist

Not only clever but also moving. Again nostalgia is at work as we remember the power of the image.  Performance and stars are still the highlight here.

Drive

Dripping with style and quiet intensity, this film is hard to resist.  Some great performances by all the actors elevate the simple story.

Take Shelter

A meditative rollercoaster of a film that combines elements of psychological suspense, horror, family drama, social realism, surrealism.  Of particular interest is the deft handling of the apocalyptic theme running through many films in the last few years.  This more personal story looks at very honest struggles, enhanced by Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain’s natural performances.

Certified Copy

A puzzle of a film in the most unexpected way.  What starts out as a somewhat pretentious intellectual exercise ends as one of the most romantic films of the year.  Check out a fine analysis over at The Other Journal.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Complicated but continually engaging.  Again, the actors are a joy to watch and Gary Oldman is a subtle wonder.  It is always nice to see a spy film that trusts the audience.

The Descendants

Probably one of the most moving and funny films I saw this year.  The kind of film that is surprising in the small details.  Goerge Clooney continues to do interesting work.

The Muppets

Not much more fun at the movies could be had this year.  It was great to see the characters and humor treated with respect and creativity.  ”Man or Muppet” is genius.
